Masachusetts Data Security Law in Effect

Massachusetts' new data security regulations are in effect. As IT Business Edge blogger Sue Marquette Poremba reminds us, the new state law requires that companies encrypt sensitive personal information on Massachusetts residents that is stored on laptops or any external storage devices.

The Patriot Ledger offers a nice rundown of some of the key regulations, which include:

  • Companies need to assign one or more employees to oversee the company's security programs.
  • All records containing personal data transmitted wirelessly or sent via public networks need to be encrypted.
  • Files containing personal information that are connected to the Internet should to be protected by an up-to-date firewall.
