Cisco Looks to Improve Cloud Security

Computing in the cloud can be risky business.  As Kara Reeder reported recently, only about a quarter of enterprises have cloud security procedures in place.

Recognizing that the way businesses are accessing information is changing and that traditional methods of protecting from data loss, like the firewall, aren't enough, Cisco is one company looking at alternative measures.  In particular, Cisco is enhancing its cloud security platform. In securing borderless networks, Cisco said there are four pillars:

  • Security from an endpoint point of view.
  • Cloud security enforcement.
  • Virtualization and security.
  • Policy.

Cisco uses a hybrid approach to cloud security, where customers want data protection for cloud applications, but also want to protect data on premises and do both simply. Think of it as a single glass pane. Say the admin gets a phone call asking, "What happened to my message?" The admin won't have to go into two separate infrastructures -- one in the cloud or one on the premise  -- to figure out what happened to that message. It improves efficiency for customers, the company says.
